Gynecomastia

Gynecomastia is feminine breast enlargement in men. Enlargement of the breasts occurs as a result of an increase in fat, breast tissue, or both. Various hormonal imbalances, drugs, and some endocrinological diseases can cause gynecomastia. However, an underlying cause is often not found. Gynecomastia can occur in men in three periods of life. These periods are infancy, adolescence, and old age, respectively. Gynecomastia, which can be seen especially in adolescence, can be permanent. In cases such as hunchback and back curvature, gynecomastia may show itself more. It is possible to get rid of this situation thanks to gynecomastia correction surgery.

Surgery

The surgery is usually performed under general anesthesia. The liposuction technique is generally used for adipose tissue that causes breast enlargement. It is entered with 0.5 cm incisions made from 1-2 points, and the fat tissue is taken out by breaking up with the help of special cannulas. The mammary glands accompanying the adipose tissue are also taken out by entering through the mentioned incision areas. No incisions are made on the nipple or its surroundings to avoid shape and discoloration or deformities in the nipples. Incision scars usually become pale and almost invisible after 3-6 months.

Before surgery

As before all surgeries, the use of smoking and tobacco products should be stopped at least two weeks before gynecomastia surgery. During the doctor’s consultation before the surgery, the patient must inform the physician about the medications he uses, the food supplements and herbal teas he consumes regularly, the current and past diseases if any and the allergies. In particular, blood thinners may need to be discontinued or rearranged.

Things to consider on the day of surgery

It is important to bring comfortable clothes for the postoperative period. Clothing that is wide, long, and buttoned will be ideal. It is also recommended to take a warm shower with an antibacterial soap the day before the operation.

If you have food supplements, herbal medicines, herbal teas, known additional diseases, or medicines you use regularly, you should share them with your surgeon and his team. If you do not have a special health problem, it can be decided whether you are suitable for the operation with the analysis performed on the day of the operation.

After surgery

Patients are usually discharged on the day of surgery or the day after. A supportive corset is worn immediately after the operation and this corset is used for 3-4 weeks. After the 2nd day, the patient can take a bath. Usually, from the 2nd day, the patient can return to work and social life with a corset. The swelling usually regresses within 2 weeks.

A detailed control by your surgeon, usually on the third day after the operation, will also inform you about the results.

Sports activities such as light-paced walking can be done until the first three weeks are complete. As of the fourth week, you can fully return to your sports life. It is recommended to wait for the first six weeks for heavy professional sports activities (weightlifting, boxing, etc.)
